Built By Bennett provides asphalt shingle roof repair, maintenance, and replacement throughout Washington, DC. While shingle roofing can be an economical and durable option, roofing work in DC is not always as simple as removing the existing shingles and installing new ones.

Many Washington properties are located within historic districts or are subject to architectural, permitting, or preservation requirements. The fact that a house currently has an asphalt shingle roof does not necessarily mean that the same material can automatically be installed again. Previous roofing may have been installed before current requirements, may not represent the historically appropriate material, or may have been installed without the approvals that would be required today.

Before recommending a replacement, Built By Bennett considers the property's construction, existing roof assembly, visibility from public space, historic character, and any applicable DC permitting or preservation requirements. When additional review or approval is required, that should be addressed before the existing roof is removed.

Many shingle roof problems can be addressed without replacing the entire roofing system. Missing or damaged shingles, flashing failures, pipe penetrations, valleys, ventilation issues, and localized storm damage should be evaluated individually before determining the appropriate repair.

When replacement is necessary, we look beyond the shingles themselves. Proper underlayment, flashing, ventilation, roof decking, penetrations, drip edge, and transitions are all critical to the performance of the completed roofing system.
